DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TIPS
FOR PET OWNERS
Even if you live in an area not prone to natural disasters, tragedy can strike without warning and your pets depend on you for their safety. It is important to have a disaster plan in place in order to provide care for your pets during an emergency situation.
WHAT IS A DISASTER?
*Avalanche/mud slide
*Blizzard
*Broken gas main
*Building collapse
*Chemical spill
*Earthquake
*Explosion
*Fire
*Flood
*Hurricane
*Lightning strike
*Long term water or power loss
*Volcanic eruption
BEFORE DISASTER STRIKES
*Call your county's emergency management department to find out what kind of natural disasters are likely to happen in your area and if they have a evacuation protocol or emergency plan in place.
*Contact local vets, kennels and pet sitters to find out if they can accomodate your pet should an emergency occur. Most shelters WILL NOT admit your pet in these situations.
*Check local hotels/motels to find out if they would allow you to stay there with your pet should you need temporary lodging.
RECOMMENDED EMERGENCY SUPPLIES
*A week's supply of food for each pet
*A can opener, if needed
*A gallon of fresh water
*Cleaning supplies
*Favorite toy or treats
*Spare collar with ID tags and a leash
*Grooming items
*Crate or carrier
*Flashlight
*Fresh batteries
*Pet first aid kit
*A current picture of your pet(s)
*Copies of medical records
**DON'T FORGET TO TELL YOUR PET SITTER WHERE YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES ARE LOCATED AND THE DETAILS OF YOUR PLAN BEFORE YOU LEAVE TOWN!
